SL vs. a Hyundai SUV-Mercedes wins!
I was hit in my '03 SL500 by a woman who decided that since she was dropping her kid off at the bus stop that the rules of the road didn't apply to her. She pulled an illegal U-turn right in front of me without looking and I had about zero time to react, just jammed on the brakes. The Hyundai SUV was crumpled on the driver's side so bad that the door could not be opened. The SL had $7K in damage, mostly all the plastic parts of the grille in front and a small patch on the front right fender. The cop noted that my car looked great compared to the Hyundai. I replied that this is why I will always drive Mercedes - they are tanks!
Postscript: got rear-ended today in my 5 day old '07 S550. Ouch! But the bumper (and Parktronic function) were the only casualties - the sheet metal looks fine, unlike the Toyota Avalon that hit me which has a creased hood and cracked grille. I LOVE my Mercedes!

Nevertheless the front and rear end of a modern car is designed to crumble to absorb energy of the crash. The passenger compartment is built rigid to protect the occupants inside.
The hood normally has a weak spot built in to prevent it to be pushed into the cabin by buckling upward. So that Avalon front end did exactly what it is design to do. The name of the game today is to protect the passenger and not the car.
Glad to hear that you are ok from the crash. The lady may have been on the cell phone talking when she pulled in front of you. Also sorry to hear about your brand new 2007 S550 getting rear ended.
I am with you Mercedes Benz is the best in the World!
