Hard to say how 164 took the impact, since the car went under. Spare wheel took most of the hit. I wonder if that could bend uniframe?
You can check for any wringles or asymmertical bends in the longitutional metal pieces underneath or in the trunk. In the rear, skin is not bolted on so you should be able to see significant distortions in the frame from the outside. With the big door in the back, the telltale sign will be the door closure difference.

It rained today in the Bay Area and there was this rear ender on CA237 with that characteristc buckled hood and the car in the front (Acura CL) was hardly damaged.

He said an oil rig tore its moorings back in 1994 in a hurricane and crashed into the bridge, but it also ran aground at the same time so the impact didn't destroy the bridge.

Here is a picture he took from the bridge:

Looked like this Peugeot did exactly what the designers want it to do, absorb energy of the impact.
But when an SUV rear ended the 95 W124 I used to drive, my car was barely damaged (small dent in the rear of the trunk and the bumper was pushed in a bit) and I drove away from the scene but the SUV that hit me was hauled away on a flat bed with the whole front end smashed in and fluids leaking everywhere.

This is typical anything meets a benz!

Good for you and that is why people say these older cars are built like tanks. My Suburban was hit on the bumper while parked, all was left was a pile of plastic and the car was untouched.

I saw a W210 in the body shop when it first came out. The bumper backing piece under the skin was made of EPS (expanded polystyrene), same material used for disposable coffee cup. I was surprised at the time but today nearly all cars bumper are made this way. They provide energy absorption and are light.

So cars are not made like tanks anymore including MB and yet more people walk away from crashes unharmed.

This is the reason I purchased the older 1995 S320 over a newer 2000+ model for the reason that they are built like a Tank. The car takes up the entire side of the garage. I am glad that the car comes with automatic folding mirrors. It helps.
