I completely agree, Marlinspike. I get really tired of anyone trying to place blame (especially a $ blame) on someone else when they obviously contribute to the situation by just using extremely poor judgement. If I do something completely stupid (I have my moments, believe me) I own up to it and move on. It's called "learning from your own stupid mistakes". The general populus seems to want to always blame someone else and then expect to be compensated monetarily. Why do you think our insurance rates and health care rates are so high? This person is lucky she didnt eliminate herself and her children from the gene pool.

I have read many of the opinions and "facts" here. Can someone explain the exact driver error that caused this. Without setting a match to gasoline, how does one cause a tire to explode in this fashion? Is all of this driver error or was there indeed an electronic malfunction? I would like to know what all of you think is the stupid mistake was, who nkows, my wife or I might make the same mistake, something I would rather avoid.

The tire exploded from being subjected to excessive rotational forces from being allowed to spin freely because the vehicle was left left in gear with the engine running and unattended. Because of the differential gear setup on the R Class having one wheel free with the TCS disengaged will allow the free spinning wheel to turn 4X faster than normal for the engine RPM and depending on the wheel involved there would be no indication of how fast it was going on the speedometer.

The real issue here is how the vehicle was left in gear.

The driver stated the vehicle was left running but not in gear. Because the R Class uses electronics to shift into and out of gear and has no mechanical gear interlock like most cars that require the driver to physically shift the transmission out of "Park" we cannot be rule out an electronics malfunction causing the car to shift itself into gear when it was left unattended.

Law-makers are supposed to regulate in the interest of the public as opposed to regulating in the interest of the regulated party.
If it says Pratt and Whitney on the outside it better say Martin Baker on the inside.

We also cannot rule out a foolish owner looking to blame someone else for their own dumb-assery.

That was my first impression too but being the owner of two of the newer models, I too have experenced random electronic gremlins in both my 05 W211 and my W203. If you read the forums for both of these models you will find there are many owners out there who will tell you the electronic controls account for most of their problems. I for one would not be as quick to judge the actions of the owner of the R class because it is a new model with major functions controlled by computers and I already know what Mercedes track record is for new designs in their first year of production.
