That video is intense. I was thinking about getting w126 when my w123 is no longer drivable. It really shows how well the passenger compartment holds up. Although it does seem there is a tad less legroom, than it does before the crash.

Because even today there are many people out there so stupid that they don't wear their seatbelt.

If anybody has ever been in a US BMW e39 5 series and a european version and wondered why the US version seems to have MUCH less leg room and knee room that person can thank every idiot who doesn't wear a seat belt.

But so yeah, it's like I said, not pre-airbag, simply not airbag equpped.
Sorry I should have said, "Unfortunately in Australia, 420SEL's from that time had the airbag only as an option. They should have been standard. My 420SEL is a perfect example. The original owner got the power rear seats, which are as good as new, but took the standard rubber steering wheel with no airbag.

Like you, for the life of me, I don't understand how anyone could consider driving a car without a seatbelt. Especially as the film tells how the seatbelt pretentioner pulled the occupants firmly into their seats. Without one you would certainly be killed and probably fly out the windscreen. I know a few people who have been booked driving without a seatbelt and I've asked them why would they do it?

Their answer is, "I won't have an accident"

The fools don't realize the word "accident" means you didn't plan it!

Even just driving, I slide around the seat and have trouble holding the steering wheel as you go around a corner. I'd hate to think what an exploding airbag would do to your face as you go forward without a seatbelt. With the US 5mph bumpers, with there increased weight, combined with airbags, and no mandatory wearing of a seatbelt just seems plain stupid.

Well, as someone who's had an airbag go off, I can tell you that it wouldn't really do anything. Granted, I was wearing my seatbelt, but they open so fast that I actually saw it was open before I hit it. You hit them at their peak fillness basically, and they deflate pretty quickly too.

For the most part, nowadays we do have seat belt laws (it's done at the state level in the US), and the idiots still don't wear them. Somewhere I saw video of MB doing some testing (old video, it wasa W123) and one of the tests was without seatbelts. There is a dummy in the BACK seat and it's head breaks the dashboard.

Well I downloaded Flash 9, and it still won't work. It looks like it's going to play the video, but the screen just stays black. Oh well, I'll take everyone's word on this one.

Wait. What browser are you using?

I'd suggest downloading Mozilla Firefox, if you haven't already, and trashing IE. Its much less prone to spyware and adware infestations, and quicker to boot. Then make sure Javascript is enabled in the content tab under the options settings from "tools".

Thumbs up

I cannot see the video either , stupid work 'puter blocks it .

I recently saw a W-126 in the scrapyards that had been rear ended by a truck or maybe a moving brick building going 85 MPH ~ the rear seatback was firmly jammed against the driver's seat back but both front doors still opened just fine ~ amazing .

Back in the 115 days Ma 'Benz made some safety training films of real live people driving cars (Mercedes , natch) into parked trucks , block walls and etc. ~ pretty eye opening stuff .

Anyone who doesn't think they need a seatbelt deserves to be removed from the gene pool before they kill the rest of us .

I have a W-123 among my other 'Benz's and I see them smashed in my local Pick-A-Part yards all the time , they do really well in keeping the passenger compartment intact .
