I think the picture says it all: "Benz meets Passat head on. Benz wins. Serious injuries for all".

Those older 90's vintage Passat's were too soft in the front. They were replaced with a chassis based on the Audi A4 to meet the ENCAP crash requirements. The last time I saw one crushed that bad the driver was DOA because the collaspe of the front sent the steering wheel back so far it actually displaced the front seat... with the driver stuck in between.

Potato Chip, custom canuter valve, low-friction muffler bearings, synthetic turn signal fluid, Hi-Definition Progressive Scan Wiper Blades.

If it says Pratt and Whitney on the outside it better say Martin Baker on the inside.

true - this model Passat (based on a stretched Golf II platform) was designed in the mid eighties.. by then crash tests mainly consisted of head on collisions. Offset crashes like this one turned out to be catastrophic for most of these cars (I remember the 1989 Escort and 1988 Fiat Tipo during these off set crash tests in Europe, the Escort burned out and the Fiat's front section got entirely crushed). In 1993 the Passat got updated to perform better plus side impact bars were added. Nevertheless, the A4 based 1996 Passat still was a huge leap forward in dynamic and passive safety.

The 1990 USA Passats had door beams bolted to the outside of the door that were hidden under the wide plastic moulding running along the beltline.

I'll check it out the next time I see one driving by .... those Passats were still good cars. However, quite sluggish compared to Golfs with similar engines.
