My car has a plackard on the doorsill saying that the SRS system (airbags and tensioners) should be replaced in 2012, giving them a 15 year service life. I have read that this is a conservative estimate and that airbags can actually work long after that. But I still plan on replacing them on schedule - just to be safe.

And the cost?

We have a 1995 E320 Wagon (two airbags). What is the cost of replacing them?

I have a 1990 w126 with dual airbags and both were due for replacement in 2004. I called several authorized Mercedes dealers, and spoke with a number of independent Benz mechanics. None had ever performed a replacement on an un-deployed airbag. All told me that my airbags should still function as intended, the expiration date notwithstanding.

Spoke with an MB Tech about this since I drive older cars as well. He assured me the SRS and airbag systems would be one of the last systems to fail on a car. Very, very stout and well engineered. This sizeable dealership isn't replacing many...

Is it possible to only replace some airbags without messing up the airbag module? I want to replace the drivers side door airbags in my C230, however one rear left airbag deployed as well. I have never had anyone ride in my backseats so I don't want to invest in new airbags for the rear. Can I just replace the front airbags?

I believe the expiration dates were estimates. 10 years appeared correct back in the beginning of the technology. I replaced the airbag on my '92 Saab convertible when it was 10. The dealer told me I didn't need to. I let them set off the old unit for "fun" & it went off fine. They felt the issue would be dampness getting into the powder & gluing the bag into a lump which would keep it from performing. Airbags don't seem to be turning into lumps from what they'd been seeing. I won't be updating any more airbags.

My car isn't due until 2014 I think. It isn't likely I'll even still own the car and even if I do, I wont replace these.

Cheers

Mine expired in my 190 according to the sticker but I wasn't going to spend the money replacing it obviously since the car is 17 years old. I'm glad to hear though that as long as the warning light doesn't come on when it's not supposed to, then it should deploy as expected should the situation arise (knock on wood it doesn't).
