They were only allowed for sale in California in 2004.

The Passenger Wagons are built in Dusseldorf, shipped whole to Florida and sold as-is throughout the US.
These can have 'automobile' plates (mine does).

The Cargo versions are built in Germany,
-disassembled- to body, engine, tranny subassemblies,
shipped to South Carolina, reassembled and sold by Dodge and Freightliner.
The disassembly/reassembly is to avoid the 25% duty on commercial vehicles... (cf: Chicken War)
they come in as 'parts' at 7% (the same duty as cars).

In 2005 Daimler-Chrysler sold 28,100 Sprinters in the US. $27k to $45k (approx).
19.5K by Dodge, 8.5K by Freightliner.
Some also come in as "Cab and Chassis" for aftermarket add-ons (Westfalia and Airstreams).

Many US buyers do an after-market retrofit to give hem MB noses and badging all around.

they're great fun, and get 24 mpg easily.
Yea, They are pretty much the only van I like, with the exception of the mercedes V Class.

My cars:

BLACK 1996 S500 (W140) - Sold

BURGUNDY 1989 560 SEL (W126) - Sold

FedEx in California is using Sprinters.
Must be the 2004 models?
I know the Sprinter-based motorhomes have extremely high prices.
