This problem can be caused by overfilling the tank (trickling more fuel in after auto-shutoff by the pump). In this case you are forcing fuel into the charcoal canister, possibly destroying it and causing a smell. NEVER overfill the tank, there is a big warning inside the fuel flap.

The issue with my car seems to smell worse when less than 1/2 tank
There is no visible sign on fuel or leakage--just BAD fumes smell--getting concerned!!!!- I put a fire extinguisher in the trunk....
You can say that again. The service rep from the dealer (HBL in VA) called last night and told me they think the gas tank is warped where the fuel pump attaches, thereby causing the leak. He assured me that it didn't pose a safety problem...I don't belive that for a minute. Their plan is to replace the tank and everything around it...naturally, this is the second time they've pulled all this out for the same problem.
Definitely no more Mercedes for me after this experience.[!]
well. come to the dark side. My family has owned 7BMWs in the last 10 years, and 4MB. The largest problem we have had with the BMWs was the windshield wiper making a twitching movement on our '03 X5. versus MB we have had a number of electrical problems/failures, shock/suspension issues, and so the list goes on. so now we just keep BMW's and Porsche's. although, my sister has an '06 A4, im pretty impressed by it. Audi's are notorious for electrical problems, and the only error she has is replace the rear lights one, when the bulb is fine.
trust me, BMW makes wonderful cars, and im sure theres at least one that electrocutes your senses.
