I remember reading that the newer E-Class mercedes were designed to withstand impacts from trucks and SUV's. I think there is alot more than just "body panels" in that area where your car got nailed. As i remember those upper fenders are a load bearing member of the car. This would explain why that Range Rover didnt do more damage to your car, and why you did quite the number on the range rover. It might also explain the reason that it is so expensive to fix that damage. Try crashing an Honda into the same vehicle and see what happens.
