You're right about the animals being tall. Years ago, my son hit a deer coming home from college in his little 914 Porche - the car was so small, it basically went under the deer - hitting it in the legs and it slid over the top and down the back of the car - lots of scratches in the paint and a couple of small dents, but not much else.

damage like this will happen I guess in most cases. I knew a guy who hit a grown size deer with his 03 range rover and sent the buck flying 40 feet down the road. The only damage to the range was a small crack in the front bumper.
