Funny Crash

About six years ago, I was riding in the back seat of a late 1980s 560SEC. We were in a traffic jam and had stopped on the freeway. We were rear-ended at about 10 mph by a baby Benz (190).

We barely felt a thing. I said, "What was that bump?" and the driver said, "You know, I think someone hit us." So we pulled over to the side and got out. The 190's front end was all caved in. Several thousand dollars of damage.

We literally didn't have a scratch on the bumper. We might as well have been riding in a tank. It was just incredible.

RE: Funny Crash

That's not uncommon. Really, it even happens with newer trucks.

I have a friend with a black '89 300SE. He was rear-ended by a 2000 Chevy half-ton. No damage to the W126, but the trucks frontal fascia was mangled.

Part of the fact of the matter is those oversized bumpers matched to your car. Be careful, if you hit one of these newer machines yourself, you might total their car, while your car doesn't receive so much as a scratch.

My mom accidentally backed into my sister's 260E and hit the quarter panel. Not the crush zone, mind you. The freakin 260E had LESS damage than the '95 E320 wagon that my mom used as a projectile! The E320 needed a new bumper assembly. The impact strip was destroyed as well. Big $$$$. My sister's car got a little crease in the lower area of the quarter panel and a small scratch, right inbetween the wheel arch and the back left door. She didn't even notice it. [:p]

The old Benzes are called "panzerwagens" for a reason!

RE: Funny Crash

I was backing out of a parking space in my S430 along with a Camry who was also backing out at the oposite side. We rear ended each other in the back at about 5 mph. To my surprise my rear bumper was still intact, there was no damage at all, and not a single bit of paint had chiped off. The Camry's bumper was cracked and all this paint was scattered everywhere.

RE: Funny Crash

The Euros dont have quite such a huge front bumper, you need to watch out a bit more for those. Is it actually illegal to run a red light as an evasive maneuver if someone is about to hit you.

RE: Funny Crash

Not sure what the last reply had to do with the original post but...you wouldn't catch me trying to make an evasive manuever for 2 reasons..
1. It's not very wise to run a red light out into traffic, you'll screw yours and someone else's day up. Plus it would be your fault.
2. When you are rear-ended, it's not your fault, so you would receive a fat insurance check. [:D] Now if it was a dump truck fixin' to blast you...well, my ass would be scrambling to go somewhere quick!

RE: Funny Crash

I know what your saying. My dad had to make this manuever once: He was at an intersection where there was a turning lane and a straight lane. He was in the left hand side. I can't remember what it was that was about to hit him but when he saw the vehicle coming from behind, he put the pedal to the floor and cut the wheel immediatly to the right. He parked his Suburban sideways right in front of the car next to him. The vehicle slid out into traffic but luckily no one got hit. Usually at a large intersection there is enough room to pull that off. It must have been pretty big though for my dad to worry about being rear ended in his big old heavy truck.
