Rock-type cars aren't good in crashes. They get out untouched, but the passengers can be seriously injured.

Driving an army tank, you won't survive a crash at 50 km/h, while the tank remains 100% operational.

Good cars are those that deform and bend. The chassis absorbs the impact energy, leaving the passenger area untouched. Car looks does like a wreck in the end, but passengers get out of it uninjured.
I agree with you there, but the S-Class is a very safe car. And also, it's sheer weight should help you out in any head-on collision. I would rather be the person in the larger Benz than the poor person in the little VW [:)]

Bryan

RE: S Class crash pics . . .

I think thats why supercars arnt designed very well for crashes, because even if it all fold, that small space isnt enough to safely decelerate your body. Did you guys know that in the Air Force ejection seats, in order to get you clear of the plane, the seat puts 13g's(as if you suddenly weigh a ton) on you, and your spine crunches 3 inches? They kick you out if you eject 3 times, because it would collapse your spine.

Great website! Excellent examples of why I bought my S500 after "totaling" a 1996 BMW Z3 & a 2001 Ford F100 truck while traveling at 20-25 mph one rainy afternoon. [;)] Thanks for the link! [:)]

It's great to know they make these cars safe, but WHY WHY must they trash so many cars. every time I see a trashed merc I feel as if a part of me died.

MORE SIMULATIONS!

I know what ya mean, Storm [:)]

But, at least we know that the Benzes have actually gone through vigorous testing to ensure the saftey of our own vehicles.

And the pics are just kind of cool to look at [;)]

Makes you feel better that these tests are being rigorously performed, I think!

RE: MORE SIMULATIONS!

More real life crashes!

"More simulations and less crash tests", that's the Lexus way, we don't need to go there.

So what if the costs get transfered back to the consumer, that's what makes a Benz safer for you to crash and survive in!

RE: The chassis absorbs the impact energy

Actually, Bela Barenyi invented crumple zones for Mercedes Benz. They bend and absorb most of the impact.

Read THIS on Wolgang's most excellent web site!

tell them that no one is safe crashing at 100MPH without a seatbelt[:0]
How true. I learned to wear a seat belt the hard way. I put my head through the windshield, face first, and it was only 30 mph when I impacted (old VW beetle). I don't care how strong you think you are...your arms and legs will crumple like a doll's on impact even when fully braced.

Another analogy one could use with people is to ask them to imagine what it would feel like if they rode into a brick wall on a bicycle at any speed.
