When I lived in Saudi Arabia, about 20 years ago, there were a lot of Benzes there with gold just about anywhere it could be put. What an eyesore. But then, they liked it.
It is pretty funny to see people trying to perpetrate the "Fake Rolex Syndrome" as described above. It's not all that common over here in Japan. What IS common, though, is to see AMGs, Brabus, Lorinsers, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, Lotuses, and quite a few Bentleys driving around town. Oh, yeah, and a couple of Maybachs, too. It's fun to go downtown on a weekend and just look at cars (yeah, okay, and skirts).
With regard to debadging, I personally think that sometimes it cleans up the lines and makes a car prettier.
I live in denver aka L.A. east. have seen 96 prelude m3. 330 turned into 33xs alpina and the classic a metro dubbed as h4 that was only done in humor ,and it worked. asked prelude owner so when did honda sell its design to bmw and won a bird thanks this made my day
