I attended the press day at the LA Autoshow on Nov. 30 and got these shots of the Maybach Excelero - a 700 hp beast of a car that was produced as a collaboration between Maybach and several other engineers to test tire compounds. Despite the many rumors, we were told - definitively by the Maybach rep at the show and for the record - that this is the only Excelero ever produced and that they will NOT be making any more. There was a nice display regarding the project, its purpose, the collaborators and the prototype nature of the Excelero.
As an MB stockholder, I can report that Maybach has been nothing but a big loser for MB financially. That further seals the deal on ever seeing something like this in general production. If MB can't sell a third of the SLRs they produced, they won't move this beast. It is interesting as a curiosity though.

My dad had a 71 Riviera, looked like the 72 and 73 models, except the trunk had what I call "gills". slightly different tail lights and a slightly different front. That's back from the era when American auto makers had their cars designed totally by stylists, no bumpers too bigger than what the sylists wanted were put on.

The Excelero is one mean looking car. Completely useless (if I remember correctly the fuel consumption on it is about 2 MPG), but this Darth Vader look alike is a very impressive piece of machinery.
