Iv heard the 52 is built on the w140 chassis!!!! anyone no anything about this?
kevinpuri,
I take it you mean the 57?
I do not think that the chassis for either Maybach is actually a W140 chassis but during it`s development a strenghthened and lenghthened chassis of a S600 was used as a test mule. Apparently the W220 chassis was not considered as either it or it`s air suspension was not strong enough to carry the weight that the Maybach would have.
So whilst the Maybach chassis is not an actual W140 chassis it does come from the same family and has it`s DNA.
Actually when you look at the Maybach it has quite a few styling cues from the greatest S Class ever built.
really? i don't see any w126 influence in the maybach.
Well you wouldn`t. Like I said the styling cues come from the greatest S Class ever built. I didn`t say that they came from the most successful S Class ever built. The two things are completely different.
"greatest S Class" that would be the w126 for most people, especially 'benz people'.
if you meant the w140, you should have said 'based on the benz that defined a generation of electrical nightmares'.
I know exactly what I meant and I would count myself as a Benz person. There is no doubt that W126 is the most successful S Class made to date and of course there was a reason for that. It was a very good car. I really like them and I can see why those that drive and own them would be very proud of them and their place in Daimler Benz`s history.
Daimler Benz was proud of them which why it invested so much time and money into developing it`s successor. The W140 was a homage to the W126 and DB sought to take it`s strengths and improve on them. I agree with you that the W140 marks the watershed between the mechanical Benz and the electronic/microprocessor driven nightmare that befell the marque and continues to plague it to this day. But scope of DB`s imagination should not be derided simply because in some areas it got it`s execution wrong.
So having invested so much into the W140 did DB produce an inferior car to the W126? No, of course it didn`t. In real terms it is superior to the W126 in virtually every way. It`s faster, stronger, quieter, safer, larger and more luxurious than it`s predecessor. It is powered by one of the greatest engines DB ever built, handles better, has a vastly superior range of refinements and whilst it is not a beauty it has the greatest road presence of any S Class. In a straight comparison of abilities the W140 wins hands down. Thats what I meant by greatest.
I know what I mean and I also know that I am not going to change your views. I guess we will continue to agree to disagree.
Perhaps I should have said " the Maybach has many styling cues from the W140 and none from the W126." I wonder why?

Well, if you really want to get into it, the W140 has some design cues from the W126, so if you think about, though maybe dilluted, the Maybach does have some styling cues from the W126.

Your point crossed my mind too. So yes, by design progression the genes of the W126 are represented in the Maybach. Same could be said for the W220.
