I drove a Maybach 57. It is difinitely quick and very very quiet. It has that same feel as a silver shadow I owned many moons ago but much more refined. You glide over everything and it seems to create an internal atmosphere that everythihng is all right in here even it hell is breaking loose out there. The interior is the most elegant I have ever seen. fit and finish are impeccable. As the sales laison said to me " all this can be yours for only $311,000 plus tax".
Indeed, it is a beautiful car. The interior more so than the outside. Everything about the car impresses me. I just saw it last saturday for the first time, then tonight there was one down at the marina.
I have owned the regular 57 and currently drive the 57s.
My regular 57 was modified with Renntech chips and stiffer anti-roll bars, per the factory. I wanted a stiffer ride after having driven the car when first released and tested on the Sebring Raceway. Just before I took delivery of this car I had to borrow one as I was going to the Amelia Island Concours show north of Jacksonville, Florida. It was a 6 hour drive.
While driving the stock 57 the 4 of us, otherwise sports car drivers, got a little queazy feeling with the “floating” softness of the ride. Setting the shock setting to a stiffer value solved the problem immediately. It was of course the most quiet of any car we had been in. The luxury was appropriate. There were no complaints.
On delivery of my own 57 I then drove it for 12,000 plus miles. There were no problems except the front a/c compressor died. We were on a long distance trip but were kept cool by the rear a/c compressor. Yes, the car had two complete separate circuits with two separate compressors. Times at the track with 4,000 miles on the car were: 0-60 4.8 sec., 1/4 mile 13.0 @ 110 MPH, impressive. Remember, I had the Renntech chips in this car.
I then traded in the 57 for the 57s. MBUSA took care of me with this. My new one has the electronic door closer as in the 62 and a few other non-AMG items to make this a truely personalized car for me. This car is as fast as the older car that had the Renntech chips, but without any modifications. The car does drive different however. It has a lower ride and therefore a lower center of gravity. It has lower profile tires and a wider tread pattern. The ride is stiff enough and yet compliant, still quiet, still a pleasure for long drives. The steering is more responsive, actually surprisingly responsive considering the weight.
The car allows for some limited wheel slip that helps propel the car better from a standing start. On my older 57 I had to disable the ASR to get any wheel slip at all and then you would easily spin your wheels. The limited slip diff helps a lot. This is fun but bad for the better, faster start-up. The difference from my 57s, even with my modified older 57, is noticeable. A driver-type person will want the 57s for sure.
With 5,000 miles on the 57s I have had only one issue, the squeaking noise of the SBC units. Yes, there are two in this car. I just hope that the vibration inside there does not result in fatigue of a part that will later need replacement. They say it cannot be fixed. I have to go monthy to have it electronically cleared, then we are OK for another month or two.
I drove the Phantom drophead a few weeks ago. It was too soft and boat-like for me. Hard braking does not do much and the car leans a lot. While some of these things are desireable for certain drivers, it is not for me. And of course it lacked the get up and go I desire.
