I just saw a video comparison of European SUV's. The M-B was a GL420 with a 303 HP, V8 diesel. I wonder if we might see this on our side of the pond any day soon?
Evidently it didn't make the marketing hurdle, but it does have Bluetec and met Bin 5.
Mercedes-Benz Vision GL420 Bluetec
What is it? The Vision GL420 Bluetec offers a first look at the next-generation diesel version of the GL-Class SUV. Unlike the current GL320 CDI diesel that Mercedes currently offers, the future Bluetec version will meet the stringent Bin 5 emissions standards, making it eligible for sale in all 50 states. The 4.2-liter V8 in the concept generates 515-lb.-ft. of torque and 290 hp, with a claimed range of nearly 600 miles on one tank of diesel fuel.
What is new or notable: The Bluetec engines in the upcoming Mercedes-Benz vehicles, as well as with their partners Audi and Volkswagen, use the AdBlue urea solution to meet EPA Tier II emission standards for nitrogen oxide. Mercedes announced that it intends to sell AdBlue versions of its Bluetec R-, ML-, and GL-Class models.
That would work to do what you suggest, but it's been around since 2007.
The real reason is to enable carrying a full-size spare.
Don't think Euro models have adBlue in any event.
This carrier with wheel/tire attached is incompatible with USA safety regs regarding passengers exiting the car.
LOL That means my Jeep Wrangler cannot be certified? And the MB G500?? Passengers don't normally exit out the rear hatch.
I don't like run flats because of the cost to replace. I carry a AAA card in case I get a flat, so the spare is never used.
And the 420 engine is Blutech clean because the Euro standards dictate clean diesels. They have better carbon controls in the EU, not too many 5L engines in their daily drivers like the USA.

Somewhat disillusioned...
This is a great driver's car, except for the comand center and lack of gauges.
The little gremlins come and go at will.
I love my GL320CDI and would buy the 420 in a heart beat. I tow a boat all the time with my 320 and am amazed by how well it tows. That little engine has a lot of low end power
I live in Al. and followed a new 420 GL coming back from Atlanta. Manufacturer plates. It was exceeding the speed limit! Left me behind as I really didn't want to drive 90.
