GL Tire pressures

Does anyone use tire pressures other than the recommendations in the gas filler door?
I had my GL320 CDi in for service at 35k miles (I do half interval oilchanges) and asked for the tires to be rotated.
I rotate the tires every 5000 miles. They did the rotation but the car came back with 50 psi in each tire. The dealer had no explanation for it--but I guess they had a pretty strong talk with the kid who did the tire rotation.

I do find that the car handles better with slightly more pressure such as 42 psi all around. I am on my second set of tires. I had a set of Pirelli Scorpion tires installed at 25k miles to replace the Conti tires.

Does anyone have any other tire pressure experiences?

I just had a set of Pirelli Scorpions Zero's (M/S) put on at about 35,000 miles and I'm so far quite impressed. Took a road trip of approx. 500 miles last weekend and they still have the little nobbies on the rears. Also, averaged a bit better than 26.5 mpg round trip.

I use the gas door recommended procedures, with the exception that I'll never have pressures under 30 psi. For rears, most of the time I'm closer to the "heavily loaded" specification.

I run 40 F and 38 R, just to be different. 50 is a bit much and the gas cap is much too low for these 19 inch wheels.

Why the switch?

Our Pirelli's are close to replacement time. Can I ask why you switched from the Conti's? Which ones do you prefer? What part of the country do you live in?

We ordered the car with the Pirelli's because we live in Florida and I read that there were some issues with the Conti's hydroplaning. They have been just fine but just wondering if we should stick with the same (and not take any chances)

Thanks
