I've just bought an used GL320 CDI one month ago. When i drive the GL320, sometimes it exhausts white smoke heavily for about 15 minutes. I had an rescue services to bring it back to the dealer but they did not find any problems with my car.
I would like to know if any of you meet the same problem as me.
Check your oil level. Usually heavy white smoke after warm up is oil getting into the exhaust and vaporizing, just like stunt planes used to do at air shows.
Is the turbo making any rattling noises at idle?

This is a great driver's car, except for the comand center and lack of gauges.
The little gremlins come and go at will.

Thanks Klausc! But this problem happen when i drive on the road, not at starting up the engine. I did not hear any strange sound when it is idle. My car is the second that meet the same problem.

There is no problem with your GL. Your GL has what is call a regeneration process that cleans your Particulate filter through the exhaust. Just let it regenerate and it will be fine. The particulate filter is an EPA requirement on all diesel vehicals produced after 2007.

It is a little hard to believe that the process of regenerating the particulate filter itself deliberately generates a cloud of dense white smoke. Kind of 'working against itself' from a environmental protection perspective isn't it?! I've notices NO white smoke from either my '07 or '08 gl 320 CDIs. I don't believe dense white smoke is normal or desirable any time.
I have an 07 GL and my dad has an 07 R, both with the diesel. I haven't experienced the white smoke, but he has. He took it in to the dealer and they also found nothing wrong. It hasn't happened again either. Don't think I have provided you any help ...
The big issue though is that since you took it in, and they have documented the problem, if something does come up later, your warranty should help. Good luck.

Mine did it on the first regen and hasn't done it since. I went to the back of the vehical and smelled the smoke and it didn't smell like oil, or any other fluid other than the smell of new metal. If someone is having the regen issue and it smells like oil or other fluids then I would have it checked immediately. I have 3 other diesel trucks with particulate filter and when they regen they don't smoke either. I don't believe these GL's are totally EPA compliant as you can't buy them in 7 different states as of today. In my opinion since it has only done it once on mine and I understand the regen process. I would not worry about it until the problem persist or sets the MIL.
