I would like to know the type of oil to use in an GL 320cdi. This vehicle does not have a particle filter.(build 07) I prefer to use castrol.
Use ONLY the oil specified to meet the M-B spec on the sticker in the engine compartment. As far as I know, only Mobil 1 ESP and ELF Solaris 5W30 are specified on the container to meet this specification.
Castrol is not on the list. There are 3 different oils listed in the back of the owner's manual. Lots of luck finding any of them in your local autoparts stores.

Somewhat disillusioned...
This is a great driver's car, except for the comand center and lack of gauges.
The little gremlins come and go at will.
Use Mobil1 Formula M ESP (emissions system protection) which is only available at Mercedes dealers.
There's a sticker in the engine compartment warning to not use ANY QUANTITY of anything else. Otherwise, you'll jeopardize warranty on particulate filter and it will be damaged.
Oil must meet Mercedes 229.51--this is NOT the same as Mercedes 229.5.
No exceptions.
BTW, if you change your oil early, you'll create damage. Follow ONLY Mercedes 10K mile specified intervals.
This is not 1956.

Mobil ONE formula M ESP is available from any large Chevron / Mobil oil distributor. [They may have to order it for you] I was able to order a case of six quarts (that was before I realized the oil change took 9 L!) from Wilcox and Flegel, a local Chevron/Mobil jobber in Longview, WA. Look an the yellow pages for oil distributors/jobbers in your area.

Next week, Sept 3, I will be taking my GL320 in to have the oil sender replaced. Is that going to do any harm? Should I have them replace the particle filter, just for fun?
The mechanic was so nice, he even "swiped" 2 quarts of oil and put them in my car so that I won't run out when I am in the hinterlands looking for 229.51 oil.
My car only has 5,000 miles on it and I don't want to suffer future problems by replacing that black, ugly stuff with new, shiney, oil.
I had the dealer replace my oil sender 2 wks ago and they basically did an oil change for me (without the filter change) they put in Mobil 1 ESP in place of my ELF (now Total Quartz) Solaris that I had put in for the 1st oil change. All I need to do now is reset the display again!
Regarding the particulate filter: That part is welded into the exhaust system and I don't think they will replace it even if you asked them VERY nicely!

Kent,
How do you create damage (and what is damaged?) when your oil change happens before the 10k interval? Somehow, I've always thought that the clean oil is better for the engine that the used and "dirty" oil. But of course, I may be wrong.
The oils that meet MB spec are depositing protective features in your engine. They don't if you change them early. There is zip/zero/nada benefit to early oil changes--this is the 21st century and things aren't what they used to be.
Change intervals for Mercedes in Europe are 19k miles, but MBUSA recognizes that the USA is filled with DIY geniuses and therefore specifies 13K/10K here.
