Peak horsepower output rating - the figures quoted in the literature - doesn't have much at all to do with efficiency as described by miles-per-gallon to get from A to B. Given the lower weight of the E cars, its not surprising that M-B detuned the engine a bit (and probably got a bit more EFFICIENT in the process).
Uhhh, thanks for that scientific conclusion.

Interested in purchasing an '09 Bluetec and reside in California so very excited about this engine becoming available here. Anyways, wanted to see what current owners are getting in terms of MPG w/ their CDI's. Just curious to see how accurate the EPA #'s (18/24) are for the vehicle.
If this helps, my ML CDI has adout 25000 miles, and today, driving 55-60 MPH on the highway, I got 31.4MPG. EPA figures are a joke. You will get much better mileage than posted, and more as the motor breaks in. Enjoy..

55-60 MPH on the highway, that's amazing. Nobody in California drives that slow, except maybe some Prius drivers.
I note that he said highway, not freeway. I'm not sure what he meant, but California thinking does not necessarily apply in the rest of the US
True. Amazing 55-60mph on the highway, sounds like a traffic jam in the making. But as California goes, eventually the rest of the country follows, (certainly the automotive industry knows that).
Of course I realize that MB cars all take premium gas unless they are diesel. It's what I put into my E55 wagon. . . .I was just making the comparison to the cost differential with gas to diesel. Right now in CT diesel is fifty cents more expensive than premium gas. It's still cheaper than the mileage I was getting with my Nissan ARmada on regular gas. My mileage may get better but the traffic on my freeways moves up here at 80 so my mileage is about 24 mpg.
I have a 2007 Bluetec and a 2005 and 2006 CDI. I find that the straight 6 CDI's get better gas mileage. From my town to Sanfrancisco (80 miles) I get 30mpg in the bluetec, 33.5 in my 2005 CDI and 34.5 in my 2006 with the Brabus D6 kit. Maybe the bluetec will get bettr gas mileage as it breaks in. I hope so.

Also, is anyone familiar with major changes to the '09 model from the current model. I read about the 20" tires, run flat tires, and better nav but not sure how accurate that is.
Many thanks for your time and look forward to reading your responses.
My 2008 E320 Bluetec gets about 25/city and 34 on Interstate driving, and on a 18 mile trip with about 8 stop lights, we usually get about 30 mpg. It's great to go around another car going only 75 mph in the left lane as if it's standing still! We appreciate the quick acceleration, so we don't drive conservatively. I hurts to see the computer show how bad our mileage goes down when we sit in a parking lot or at a red light and idle, though! If this car could downshift better than a new driver trying to downshift manually, I would be happy with it. As it is, I'm starting Lemon Law proceedings due to the rough downshifting whether the car is cold or warm. It just doesn't slow down with the smoothness that a $57K car ought to have, and MB can't/won't fix it. (They never tried replacing parts.) Good luck with the 2009.
