My oil is low, can I add 1 quart of Mobil One synthetic 10W30? Is this the right viscocity? I can't find the information in the owner's manual.
The only oils approved for CDIs are 229.51 low ash specification oils.
Here is a list of approved oils for MBs: Mercedes-Benz Engine Oil Recommendations Oils approved for diesels are noted as such. Mobil1 ESP Formula 5W-40 is found easily at the dealer.
I would make sure that it's not a problem with the level sensor before you add oil. I've had that problem on ML and GL CDIs. It seemed to happen after driving for a few hundred miles.
It is not the sensor since I checked the dipstick and it is at the bottom below the appropriate range. I think it makes sense since the truck has 8,000 miles and I had the oil changed at 3,000 miles. I will take it to the dealer for the 10,000 mile service and have the oil and filter changed. Any thoughts?
First oil change should have been at 10,000 mi. The 'factory' oil needs to stay in that long to properly break in the engine and 'set' the additive package. In any event, use ONLY the Mobil ESP oil specified. Not usually too hard to find and it is NOT equivalent to Mobil 1 from Walmart.
From what I know MB does not use break in oil like some other Japanese makers do. So changing the oil earlier is fine. Diesel engine does not fully break in for 20 25k miles. It takes that long for the engine to achieve optimum compression.
Fuchs TITAN GT1 229.51 SAE 5W-30 (first fill oil in OM 642) is different from the Mobil 1 ESP change oil that M-B approves. It may not be classed as a 'break in' oil, but it DOES have a different additive package. Those additives require time to work, hence the 10,000 mi first change interval. Most subsequent change intervals are longer - depending on your driving conditions and habits.
