I need a people mover and something to tow my toys
As stated, I need something to haul people and tow big kid toys (new motorcycle I got yesterday, buggy, probably a couple more bikes soon). I am already settled on getting the CDI version, but I'm between the ML320CDI and the GL320CDI. I realistically don't NEED 7 seats. But I might at some point use them all. It's pretty easy to fill 5 seats in my S63 on any given Friday night. Thus the ML and 5 seats seem small and limited. BUT--the GL seems like it might be too large. I'm not sure what the wheelbase is or the overall length and width are. I've driven the R320 and it was massive, but didn't really feel like it. Anyway, any feedback is appreciated.
A couple of facts: 2007 GL320 CDI is rated at 7500 lb towing capacity; 2008 GL320 CDI is rated at 5000 lb towing capacity. I don't know why, both are the same weight, same power and transmission. If towed weight (a large boat) is a possibility, look for a 2007.
We have had both vehicles but have not towed with either one. As far as room is concerned, although we are only two most of the time, when the family visits or we get together and go to a restaurant, the seating for 7 often saves having to take another car. I like the ride and visibility from the GL a lot better. Mileage on the 2008 is NOT as good - don't know why.
I hear you in regards to finding the right combo of power and space. The GL is good, but not great when it comes to space. We have a dog (big dog), a toddler, and 2 adults. Each road trip we take is a challenge finding room for our "stuff". I haven't broken down and purchased a roof top carrier, but one more kid or dog and we'll have to. The bottom line is that even with the 3rd row folded down, the space left is about what you'd expect in a standard SUV (i.e. not an Excursion, Suburban or Expedition XL).
I wouldn't even consider an ML for this reason. The GL is tight when you have a lot of stuff, and frankly, there's no way my crew could fit in a ML. We don't have helmets, pads, or other bulky gear that I'm sure you have, but we do have luggage, a stroller, a pack and play...you get the idea. Don't skimp on space. The GL is a spectacular vehicle, and you won't be disappointed. Just don't expect it to be as big as one of the monster SUV's.
As far as towing, it's incredible. We tow a 5000 lb boat with ours, and it is incredibly smooth with absolutely no rocking or swaying. I like the diesel engines, but I think the 320 is the wrong match for this truck. It's nice, but not as a tow vehicle for heavier loads. I didn't realize that MB dropped the top tow rating as Fourdiesel pointed out, but it adds support that the 320 is designed for efficiency, not overall usability. If you're going to tow, stay with the 450 or 550 or wait (who knows how long) for the 420 diesel. Here in Texas, diesel is $0.25 more than premium unleaded, so the cost savings is pretty much gone.
Oh, and one last thing, don't even think about comparing the GL to R320. It's like comparing a Hummer with a Caravan. Two totally different classes...
I had a 2007 ML CDI and now own a 2008 GL CDI...I loved my ML but have to say that if you plan on carrying any quantity luggage or belongings dont even think about the ML. The GL comes with alot of bells and whistles also.
