Adding Back Up Camera

Can a backup camera be added very easily to an 07 GL450 with Nav? What is missing if the car was produced without the camera, besides the camera of course?

Dear BigBadDAE,
I bought my GL450 in August 2006 before the back up camera was offered. I had one installed by the company that MB uses here in NYC, Teknicar 212-765-4777. They did a great job in one day. They had to do all the wiring from the dash to the rear door, but it looks like a factory installation. Your dealer most likey has someone that does their installation. It can be installed on any model M/B.

You may or may not have the camera ready radio. If you radio is cam-ready then you need the camera, wiring and to program the radio to know that the camera is present. If you do not have the camera ready radio you have two choices: Go to mercedes parts and do a core trade on a updated camera ready radio and then you can use the previous method or alternately purchase one of the available rgb conversion kits to give your radio the reverse cam input...

The core trade is around $400 for a refurbished radio or $1100 for a new radio. The rgb kits run $500-$800 depending on where you get them but give you the additional feature of a seperate video input as well (so you can hook a dvd into your monitor, etc.)
