I have a 2008 GL450 which is about 2 weeks old. I have the folding mirrors programmed so they fold in automatically when the car is off and locked. Once the car is unlocked, the mirrors open up. Today the driver's side mirror did not fold all of the way out when I unlocked and started the car. I could get it to open all of the way out if I used the button on the door. The problem happened several times during the course of the day, and I noticed that it wasn't folding as far in as the passenger side mirror. I got the mirrors opened all the way out, then turned off the feature which automatically folds the mirrors when the car is off and locked. I suppose I could open and close them manually when I want, but I like the automatic feature, and for $70k I believe they should work as designed. Obviously I will bring the car into the dealer soon to get this fixed, but I was wondering if this is a common issue, and whether there is anything I can tell the dealer to look for. Thanks.
I have the same problem with my passenger side mirror. I'll be asking the dealer to fix it when I take it in for the 1,000 mile check up (and to get the air suspension malfunction looked at)

I have a feeling this is going to be a very common failure on these vehicles, espeically as the years go by and these things age. I'd think they aren't too cheap to repair either! Out of warranty and you are out of money!
I had this issue too and dealer replaced the motor, I believe. There is a TSB out about lubricating these mirrors so make sure dealer does conduct that service when you take it in.

I had same problem within first month of ownership, dealer lubricated and re-programmed and it was fine, but strongly recommended disabling this feature and use the button if you really have to fold mirrors in tight parking spots. His reason, too much movement is not good for the mechanism life.

i havent had this happen (yet) on my 2008 gl450 with just under 1000 miles...and i havent tried out my air suspension yet...so, thanks for the heads up on testing that one.
my s class also has the same folding mirror when locked function and it has performed flawlessly (so far), so i am a 'little' surprised that people are having issues with them.
i did get the extended warranty as i plan to keep this car for awhile. it is great for peace of mind and a bargain as when my clk sunroof malfunctioned a month out of manufacturers warranty, my extended warranty kicked in. the total cost was about $2k to fix. the driver seat power function also seized up which required another trip to the dealer for repairs...i dont remember how much that one was...but i bet it wasnt cheap...let's just say i got my moneys worth by getting extended warranty.
It seems the problem is cross platform because the ML's with auto folding mirrors have the same problem. My driver side mirror locks up half folded, at times but I've had no issues recently.
