lost my secret decoder ring

Do the letters in MB's model numbering system mean anything? I remember a post on the SLK forum some time ago where the poster said "K" was for "Kompakt", which makes sense. What do the other letters mean?

TIA

Thanks; was also wondering about C & E.

Does "S" mean the same thing for an S-class...while not untrue I guess, it's not the first attribute that comes to mind when I think of an S-class.

the C was introduced as compact and took the place of the 190-series. the E took the place of the 300 series and the S took the place of the 500/600 series. E was used because 300E was before and they just switched the letter to the front. same with the S. it gets a little confusing with the coupes and roadsters. although, SL has been around forever and CL took the place of the S coupe. basically, the C means coupe and the L is for luxury. not sure about the CLK, or the upcoming CLE.

The letters can have more than one meaning

TD is touring,diesel/station wagon.T is the body style, not the turbocharger.
SD is sedan,diesel.
CD is coupe,diesel.
K can also signify "kurz",or short.
Einsprizung is fuel injection.
A lot of confusion is created when different meanings are attached to the same letter..."L" can stand either for light or long,"C" could be either an '80s coupe or a newer C-class....the same letter can have an entirely different significance depending on the car it's on.

Ahh that makes sense

Okay That helps me. I wondered if the L in my SDL meant Luxury but since it has the same standard features and upgrade options of a SD except it has a lot more leg room I'm guessing its for long.

Luxury may just be an understood value of MB cars.

Thanks
