Hello everyone, I have a 1981 300SD, but now, its getting old, and I might need a replacement soon. I would like to know how reliable the below listed MB diesels are, and what defects they may possibly have, I know what some of the the W126 problems are, anyways, here they are...
1981-1985 300D/CD W123
1978-1987 300SD/SDL W116/W126
1987 190D 2.5 Turbo W201

1982 300D, DB877 ext./code #135 mb-tex int. aka: petrol green ext./creme int.

I would highly recommend a W123 300D with turbo since I personally own one. The only thing is the cars except the 190 are as old as your car. I wouldn't worry about defects in cars this old. If they had any, they would have been taken care of long time ago. You would have to look for a while to find one with low mileage. I haven't heard anything good about the 190's either and they are tiny compared to your 300SD. I don't think you would like the 190 after driving the 300SD for so long. The W123's are also a bit smaller that the W126s. The 300D with turbo has the same engine as your car but is many pounds lighter than the 300SD. Its performance is decent, it's easy to maneuver into tight spots, visibility is excellent and handles exceptionally well. They seem to last almost forever too.
Oh yes, parts are fairly inexpensive, especially if you buy them off the internet.
Why not keep the car you have. The 126's are known to last a long time as well.

Unless you've alot of problemsy with your present 300SD I can't see the point in getting another car the same.
Have you considered a early W124 300D.
