Considering a 98-99 CLK 320/430 as my first Benz

I'm hesitant to pull the trigger as I've heard mixed reports on reliability and maintenance. I am currently drive a mid 90s BMW 3 series and am comfortable with the maint/repair costs associated with it. Is the Benz comparable to the BMW in that respect? Is there reason for me to be scared? Will my potential CLK (40K miles +/-) be a good daily driver or will it kill me with repairs & routine maint. I am also considering Lexus GS300 and BMW 528i. Any words of wisdom would be greatly apprec.
