Anyone have experience with HID-like bulb upgrades?

A headlight bulb has burned out in my '94 SL600 and I was thinking about replacing both with PIAA Platinum or White Xtreme bulbs or similar. I love the HID look but I don't want my car to look like those kids in the Civics! Does anyone have experience with upgrade bulbs like these? Do they look good? Is PIAA worth the extra cost over Sylvania or similar? ANY help appreciated!
