1987 190e sluggish/no power, idles very rough

I just bought this car knowing about the problem. The guy said he was cleaning the engine at the car wash, he did not cover anything and now the car is very sluggish, idles rough, no acceleration, he then replaced the wires and distributor cap and that did not solve the problem. Before he sprayed the engine, he stated it idled rough, however it had power from the start/drive. What could have happened and what do I need to do or where do I start. Is it a relay of some type? HELP PLEASE. 210-722-1050, 210-650-0209

If the problems were present before the 'engine wash' you may want to check the fuel filters. If these problems were worse after the distributor cap and plugwire change, he could have mixed up the wires on the cap. It sounds like you are getting plenty of spark, but maybe out of sequence.

Theres no reason to replace a dis. cap or wires after a car wash. I assume some water got in the distributor cap which can be fixed with a spray of CRC, RP7 or any of those sort of things. Take it to a Benz specialist for a report/ tune.

Dale I answered this on 210 forum. I agree, that water in the distributor is a likely culprit. Mixed wires would probably give you more trouble. Another possibility is that a vacuum line got loose. I washed my engine twice and had no problems. Of course, diesel has no plugs or distributor...

piotr, do you know where I can ge used/refurbished Mercedes parts? How about a 2nd control module? what does it do? A mechanic told me I needed one for the rough idle, it runs better now that they put on an ignition module and got the new plugs and wires correct. Thank you.

I strongly suggest AT LEAST refurbished parts. Do not buy used ones (my experience). You can comparison shop at the advertisers of this site. My two favorite are germanstar.net and thebenzbin.com. otherwise just use google to search the net. I just got a rebuilt ac compressor for $240 (the quote on a new one was $600) from an AC web site. the used parts are by now 15-16 years old and not in much better shape than what's on your car.
