What to expect?

I am on my 3rd MB. I have driven a 280 gas and a 240D each to 250,000 miles before retiring them. In each case repairs were limited to tires, shocks and mufflers only and in one case I sold the 280 for more than I paid for it 10 years before. I now have a 1988 E260 with 110,000 mi on the odo. I take good care of the car by changing its fluids etc. regularly but wouldn't let a dealer come within 5 miles of it. I refuse to spend the money on useless churning of repair bills. Does my car have a good reputation for longevity? Can it go 250k? A mechanic told me that I do not need to replace the timing chain. Is this credible?

Re: What to expect?

You usually don't change the timing chains until they start to rattle like crazy (worn chain guide(s) or worn chain). Or you can wait unitl they break. I have seen bad results (cracked cover) when you wait until they break, not including the inconvenience.
