California Fuel Sensitivity of 91 500 SL (except Union 76)

About a year and a half ago, my car began starting hard and emiting black smoke on starting. It is a 91 500 SL with 130,000 miles on it. It runs great and burns no oil. After trying a fuel additive and having the problem go away (I was using Mobil High Test exclusively), I decided to try other gas. Chevron did the same, slow start and black smoke. Also with Shell. The only fuel that seems to work, quick start and no smoke, is Union 76. My mechanic doesn't seem to know how to fix this, it would seem that perhaps a hotter spark plug might work? I can't imagine I am the only one with this problem. I believe it is the REFORMULATED gas in California that is the problem. But, how do we fix it?? Thanks in advance for any advice. My e-mail is bob canales
