1959 190 SL

I have a 1959 190 SL my dad bought for me when I was 7. I am finally getting it back from the mechanic, with only body work done. No motor or Tranny. I would like to know what engine would fit under the hood, if you know. I was looking to put in a chevy or pontiac motor because I don't have all the money in the world, but would like a V-8. Which would be the biggest that would fit?

Thank you,
Kosta

Please do the world a favor and sell the car to someone who won't desecrate it.

Re: 1959 190 SL

Personnely I'ld try to keep it original. But at the end of the day its your car! and any thing is better than it being left to rot away. However if your on a budget why not try to pick up a Merc. motor, maybe either an old M115-230 or M102-230 would drop straight in and at a later date when you've got the cash restore or replace the original lump. If your interested in power I wouldn't advise too big a unit as the structure was never intended to take it.

Re: 1959 190 SL

As I remember the original motor in your car was a four cylinder with Zenith down draft carbs. It doesn't seem to me that you would have much room for a V-8! If you need to go non original compare the weight and size of the original engine and trans and use the weight and dementions against any possible replacement. Good luck. Don't mind those purists out there. They can't help themselves!~!
