Care for wood in dashboard

My ten year old 300E has some cracks in the wood veneer down around the gear selector and the power window switches. It seems most all older MBs I've seen have the wood veneer cracking and peeling off, leaving the dull unfinished surface underneath.

Is there anything I can do to keep my wood from getting worse and peeling off?... Or is this just typical wear and tear in these cars? ArmorAll on dashboards is a no-brainer, but is there an equivalent product (perhaps a household wood conditioner) that can be used for this? FYI, this car was garaged the first five years of it's life, then not garaged the next five. I just bought the car and will be once again garaging it.

Chaz
