Any Inexpensive Way to Get Star Codes on Your Own?

Is there a way to buy a reader for STAR codes like you can buy a reader for OBD codes? If it makes a difference, I am looking to read codes from a 97 and a 98 model. I would be willing to make an investment in a tool if it financially feasible as I see myself being a long term Mercedes owner.

Any advice appreciated.

I've been asking the same question for years, while suggesting making all those reviews combined in one section, when moderators did not want to do it.
Per last reviews, you can buy SD clone from China for about $1000, what comes with laptop, or buy +- $300 US-sold scanner that will cover most, but not all needs.

Thanks for the help. The $300 scanner, does that do more than just OBD codes? If so, what is it able to pull? And how could I buy one?

I have OBD Bluetooth Dongle that works well with my phone and pulls all standard OBD codes. But I got to watch an independent BMW/Mercedes mechanic work on my car the other day. He pulled codes from the STAR connector regarding problems that the car had in the past. Thankfully, they did not reappear after clearing. He told me what he was using was 5K with yearly license fee. But, this covered every single car made since OBD was implemented, not just Mercedes.

Here is the topic I saved about cheaper scanners.
I found too many uncertain things in descriptions what those things can do, when I can't justify to spend $1000 for "full clone".
Knowing a guy with a scanner sure helps, but fact is that even scanning helps - I was able so far to solve my problems without SD.
