Answer me this Batman!

OK, I cleaned the MAF sensor on a 2010 Chevy Impala with CRC MAF cleaner, put it all back together and the engine started right up and ran fine, but when I cleaned my GL550 MAF sensor, I let it dry for hours, put it all back together and it wouldn't start right off, had to keep turning it over and playing with the throttle and it finally started to sputter and after a minute or so finally started and ran. What just happened???

How is the Mercedes running NOW? Is it still sputtering? Were you having a problem with it BEFORE you cleaned the MAF?

How was the Chevy running before you cleaned it, after?

Just looking for more input.

crap... I just replied and wasn't logged in, so I have to start over....
OK, the Chevy was running fair and all of a sudden started to sputter, backfire and stall. It threw a code for MAF and the engine light came on. It would hardly do 10mph. So I cleaned the MAF with CRC MAF spray cleaner and it is now running fine, smooth with no throttle hesitation! I'm sure the MPG will improve.

The MBZ was running OK, but sometimes it would have a rough idle now and then, so I figured that the MAF might be dirty, after all, it has never been cleaned in 113K miles! NOW she is running fine, just took her out for a 50 mile run in town, 18mpg. Maybe this will improve MPG? Also testing non-ethanol gas.

There was nothing wrong with your GL's MAF sensor, until you sprayed it. Hopefully you put it back together properly, because if there's a leak, it won't like it.

your 2008 doesn't need non-ethanol gas. Ethanol actually boosts octane, and only causes trouble for cars that have hoses for fuel that aren't ethanol resistant. Car's from the 80's and back can have trouble. My 1972 Ferrari Dino was susceptible to damage from ethanol based fuels. We replaced all the fuel lines to help prevent this issue.

It sounds like you Benz's MAF was fine. Sometimes preventive maintenance really isn't. It's running ok now, chalk the rough running up to computers adjusting to the clean MAF. If it kept running rough, well, that's a different story.

Never took it apart, just sprayed it in the throttle body then let it dry out for several hours. As far as non-ethanol fuel, just seeing if it increases MPG.

So you spray the MAF while pushing the residues down the intake pipe?
Not something I would do.
Ethanol has less energy than gasoline, so don't expect better mpg because of that.
But having cleaning ability it can improve combustion, so who knows.
Happy motoring.
