another purchase advise question

Good evening folks,

I have a purchase question. I have owned 2 MB's, an 84 300D that was awesome and a 93 300D that was a pain in the ass. I have been in subaru's since and have a Ford Excursion 7.3 so I am OK with a wrench but no means a pro at anything. So.... Looking at these 3 cars as my DD for about 300-400 miles a week of duty mostly on open freeway:

98 300D w/ 231K in awesome shape and a great history $5500 w/ recent glow plugs, AC compressor and evap.

05 E320 CDI 189K with same history and condition, just has the wrinkled console $7K

06 E320 CDI 179K in great shape but waiting on a history report $7400 and is the farthest from home.

Thank you folks!

some owners like newer body, some like the older, more classic look and that is probably first factor to consider.
Coming to technical comparison, the cdi engines deliver more HP with better fuel economy, but then when something goes wrong - they cost more.
Just set of injectors when you need them can set you 4 grands. 2005 and 2006 will have SBC brakes, what is another high maintenance item.
Buyers going for reliability and lower maintenance cost go for older 300DT engines.

I definitely dig the newer style but I did some reading on the SBC system and it is just weird. The 1500-2K for a 8 year newer car is worth it until you have to fix something big. Thank you! Anybody owned them both and have a preference?

Find the best maintained one with the best maintenance records.

I did own them both and more.
But I am fix-it-all DIY and I like challenge.
I think each of those models has its value somewhere, just not all the values in single car.
I like 2008 Bluetec a lot, but you did not ask about that one.

Right. I like those as well but I would have to take a loan for one and I don't do loans...... anymore.

Thanks again

I was shopping for newer diesel just couple months ago and 320 cdi were coming with the same prices what 2 years younger Bluetec did.
Technically I would prefer I6 engine as much easier to work on, but if the same price got rid of SBC, gave me Bluetooth, much better GPS and couple other gadgets, why da heck not?
Now I am also in love with 7sp

New development: found a 08 bluetech with 201K , great shape aside from a ripped seat pocket, great maintainence history for $6K asking price. Thoughts?

Garage
Buy it

We have one. Bought new. We have had ZERO repairs to this car. Preventive maintenance is by-the-book and accomplished by our excellent and trustworthy dealership (REALLY!), McGeorge MB in Richmond VA.

This is my wife's ride and perhaps the reliability can be partially attributed to the fact that I am forbidden to maintain it. I can muck about all I want on my 34 yo 300CD but hands-off the 2008.

Ask if oil cooler was replaced. If not- calculate the price into the offer.
Still plan to spend few hundreds on parts that aged or wear out at 201k, but you will love the acceleration and 35 mpg.
