I sure hope so.

The airflow gets better and the blower fan does not have to work as hard and as a result lasts longer and runs with less noise.

In the past filters had manufacture date on them. At least 2 cars I bought 7-8 years old had factory mounted filters in them.
Depends where you drive - you might check filters for pollution.
Having filter minders on my cars, I routinely make 100,000 miles on engine air filters, but lately bought car from TN and insects are everywhere - even inside lights.

I change the cabin filter annually in my SLK. They can get clogged and have bad smells depending on usage.

And I do it myself. At least annually.

Lately I found the way to determinate dirt on cabin filters.
W211 has pretty big, single filter accessible under the hood. On newly purchased car the filter look relatively clean, but engine filters were packed, so I did not have good feelings.
So having new filters I weight them. The still clean looking filter was 3 oz heavier than new one.
3 oz of fine dust was not visible to bare eye, but had to slow down air flow.
Than severe duty air filter on my Powerstroke claims to have 2 lb dust capacity, so maybe 3 oz is not excessive, but placebo effect kicked after I put new cabin filter.
Now my throttle response is much better
