Question on the repair for compressor for the airmatic system.

So my ML320 has 100k miles on it and we never changed any of the airmatic components on it. Over the past couple months we got warning about the airmatic system and finally it recently broke to not working anymore.

We are trying to diagnose the issue to see what we need to fix. We tested the fuse and that seems to be working right, so we think the issue is either with the air compressor itself or with the relay.

My question: Is there an easy way to figure out which of those two systems is broken without taking everything apart? Also would there happen to be a third option for a likely break we are not considering?

Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately the system is not giving any feedback to driver, so troubleshooting without SD is very difficult.
I add pressure gauge on the line, what let me observe compressor performance and detect line leaks.
Compressor rebuild kits sell as cheap as $17 on ebay, add about $10 for air filter and you can recycle your drier in household oven.
I made pictorial on competition forum in W211 section.

What about bypassing the relay and connecting the pump directly to the battery. Would this allow me to test to see if the pump is working correctly (and easily since I don't have to disassemble it), or would there be any way I could break the pump or other parts by doing so?

I've been doing that while having my pressure gauge hooked up, but beware that you are bypassing pressure switch, what brings safety concerns.
Some members activated the compressor at the relay prongs.
It is last relay in my fuse box.
Still even if you hear the compressor running and you don't see what pressure it builds, that is not going to tell you much.
You should hear the compressor running when you put your head close to LF wheel and somebody starts the engine.

I would not put just the battery to it if it is hooked up to the air system. Jump the relay as Kajtek suggested at the relay.
