Hope everyone is doing OK. My problem is the following: when I drive my 1996 C280 on the highway, A/C works flawless and the engine temperature stays at 80°, but when I drive in the city I have to turn off the A/C because the temperature rises to above 110° with the A/C on or the car turns off whenever I stop at a red traffic light with the A/C on
What I've done so far:
1. Changed the thermostat.
2. Made sure the auxiliary fans and the main motor fan working properly.
3. Checked any burnt out fuses. All OK.
Have you had any work done on your A/C lately . ? re-gassed , Sounds like your condenser may have lost its efficiency to do its job . Do you Know if your gas charge is ok . Are your Aux fans coming on as they should lo and High speed?
If your fans work as they suppose to, you have dirty radiator.
Citric acid can restore it to some degree, but often new radiator is the real solution.
Than I would double check the fans as per description there is no overheating at highway speeds.
I had it re-gassed. The pressure is ok. All fans are working properly(Low/High). A mechanic told me it could be an idle sensor.. I took a picture of that sensor from different angles so you guys can see it. Again my C280 turns off when sitting at redlight traffic light at iddle.
That is a scan tool made by Launch. I dumped mine because it was not working well with 20 years of MB products.
If he claims his does work then ask him for the code number for a faulty idle sensor. The latest Autel and even clones of the MB Star system would show a code for the idle sensor/control unit.
i have similar issue except my w140 will work will at any speed until it gets hot. i don't have a solution but i'm on to compressor speed sensor, belt and tensioner or slippage due to oil leaks on compressor clutches. also id i turn off and restart the compressor will restart and continue if i have speed or shut down in traffic. no faults according to mechanic - self test shows (circulation pump short) but mechanic says working.
