Zero oil pressure - where to start?
While I was driving on the freeway I noticed my oil pressure gauge had dropped to zero. I immediately pulled over and stopped the engine. I looked under the bonnet but no sign of oil leaks and the oil level was normal. A little later I briefly started it again to see if there was any change, but still zero (thought the engine seemed to run OK). I then had the car towed home, where I once again very briefly ran the engine in order to move the car, and again saw zero oil pressure. I then drained the oil, figuring that at least it was still a bit warm and without solving the problem I was never going to be able to warm it up again.
Now I'm trying to work out what is wrong. As usual I began in the forums, but all discussions of oil pressure that I could find involve some pressure under some conditions, rather than zero pressure under any condition. This makes me think (hope) that the problem is with the gauge. Presumably the hose could be removed from the filter housing and a bit of pressure applied with a bicycle pump to see whether the gauge moves - but I'd rather not break anything and end up having to remove the housing from the block (I've done that once when it was leaking). Any suggestions there? Or what else - remove the sump and look for anything unusual there?
All suggestions welcome with thanks!
