Thinking of buying a used Mercedes, need help

Greetings. I am possibly in the market for a used Mercedes...the allure of no longer having car payments, and going the used route makes a certain amount of sense. But need some help narrowing my search.

After doing some research, I think I am most interested in the CLK series.
A few I have found online that look interesting:

2002 CLK430 coupe
2002 CLK430 convertible
2004 CLK500 coupe

However, I have heard for awhile there were reliability issues in the early to mid 2000s, but that it is was also model dependent...

Ideally I am looking to spend no more then $10k, $8k would be perfect, and looking for something with less then 75k miles that was well cared for. I have someone nearby that can help with maintenance and any repairs...so I wouldn't be planning on taking it to a dealer.

Would greatly appreciate some insight into these vehicles, reliability, and other options I should consider.

I have worked on the clk430's. Nothing really difficult in regular maintenance items. Water pump can be a bear to change but nothing ridiculous. Check out the w208 forum for information on what to look for. One of the members there wrote a buyers guide that my friend used when he bought his clk430.
Where are you located? If it snows where you are, I would also budget for snow tires. I would also check the sales forum and Bruce Mendel to see if he has anything in stock that meets your needs.
Good luck in your search.

Mike

I am in Charlotte, NC.
Will check those forums out and look Bruce up.

Any preferences between 1st and 2nd generation CLKs?
Thanks!
