Noise in Front of Engine

Hello All,
91' 350 SD engine making an interesting noise coming from the front of the engine. I put the stethoscope on the engine and it is loudest on the points with the arrows. No idea what the noise is.. I'll make a quick video as well..

Any thoughts, please let me know.

I was unable to upload video to this site so here is the link to YOUTUBE.

Thanks so much!!

Tony

This noise only occurs during idle by the way.. Any additional RPM and the noise goes away...

I believe it is your tensioner shock (left hand arrow) either hitting the engine block at the top or hitting at the bottom. Be careful of the fan, but pry on it with a long screw driver to see if you can change the sound. In my case I put a plastic drain plug seal washer between the shock mount and the engine which stopped the noise.

Thanks for the input.

Tried the tensioner trick and made no difference.

I read somewhere that the fan clutches can make a similar ticking and clicking noise as this. Will pull this apart and test.

I suppose while I am at it I will run the engine without the belt to see if the noise dissipates. I don;t see any reason I can't do this for a few minutes..

Any other thoughts, I'm all ears.

Thanks,

Tony

Have you checked your timing chain?

Found the problem... The bearing in the tensioner was shot.. For some reason leaning on it with a bar made no difference. However when replacing the water pump gasket a few days ago I pulled the tensioner and the bearing was totally stuffed..

Now onto pulling the turbo to check for an oil leak from the seal causing one quart of oil every 300 miles.. Hopefully that is the problem!
