I disagree with redghost but agree with jn74sl. Redghost does not distinguish the 210 from the 211 chassis of E-class. 2003 E-class 211 chassis was a disaster yes. The 210 was in my opinion solid and simpler. Colinc1444 originally stated nothing older than 1990 which is the reason for the route I went. I have an older Mercedes and yes I love the older ones as well. Simpler and reliable. Diesels were so solid and could go for 400k at times. If you want something newer meaning the past 20 years or less, than 210 before the change.

I have had good luck with my w210 E55 AMG. I think at the OP's budget, it might be close on getting a very nice example of a w210. I might be wrong on this. I do not keep up on the going rate on the E320's but I like the m112 engine.

I think at $4000 a nice w124 is the way to go. If you are adventurous, maybe a w123. I know you said not before 1990 but I still think they are worth a look. Who knows, you might really like them.

An R107 is an insurance poison pill for a young driver. A diesel of any sort would be far more pleasing to an actuary, as the thing would be 4 door sedan, slow, built like a tank, and older even gooder to work on. No ABS, simple injector pump, no computers, no cats, simple electronics, add a manual trans, and it would be perfect. Mechanical or maintenance cost would be around $1k for an old car. Rubber bits are less expensive than all the electronics of a newer car.

I'm biased towards a W124 or W201
those are solidly built cars and great 1st Mercedes
