What model convertible for reliability?

Hi everyone, very new. Long story short, I want to buy my dad a used mb convertible. Upper price limit 25k, would like to spend around 15k but will stretch if perfect. Have heard 97/98 sl500 series, and the 560s are also great. Top 2 priorities are reliability and comfort.
Really appreciate any advice! Thank you!

The SL's are really, in my opinion, inexpensive for what they offer, however I wouldn't say the reliability is 5 star. When something goes wrong the SL's are not inexpensive to repair.

You might want to consider the CLK series. Reliability is good, convertible experience is good. Will fit 2 grandchildren in the back etc. These are certainly in your budget and a 209 can be bought for the low end you indicate. Good luck on the hunt. I wish my son bought me a Mercedes!

How old

is Dear Old Dad? An SL can be a minor struggle to get out of with the top up for stiffer folks.

I personally don't like CLKs but compared to SLs you can get a far newer one well within your budget. Avoid mid-90s (don't remember the exact years) unless the wiring harness has been replaced. They used a soy-based insulation for a few years that simply bio-degraded. What were the alleged engineering geniuses thinking?

Thank you! Yeah, my dad is awesome, retired recently from running a social services agency, where as director, his car allowance would have provided a Mercedes, but he drove a basic model Buick and repurposed that extra money for the agency.
This is very helpful, thank you!
