I am looking for a safe and economical daily driver. I dont need a daily driver immediately per se, but I would love a car that I'm not afraid to take on a road trip with my friends. Diesel is appealing to me specifically because im really curious about alternate fuels like vegetable oil. Is it truly feasible to almost eliminate fuel costs? Where should i go to learn more about it?
If i do decide to get a diesel, im probably deciding between a mercedes diesel and a manual TDI of some sort. I know the VWs are more economical than the larger mercedes diesels, but would a 1987 300SDL be safer than a more modern, simarly priced VW?
And how crazy would it be to put a manual transmission on a 300sdl? My friend has a garage and a good amount of tools and has also done a few transmission swaps on his own cars already.
