Need help for smog test please! Three monitors not ready! At my wit's end
I'd like to get guidance on an issue I'm having trying to get my vehicle smogged. It is a 1996 C-280. I live in California.
The car was due for a smog test in April so I took it to a smog test only shop as was required. The vehicle tested and failed. The results showed:
OBD System Checks: Fail
I asked the technician what he thought was the culprit and he said it usually means the catalytic converters are bad. So, I take it to a mechanic shop that also specializes in muffler/exhaust work and he recommends we change the cats. So I do.
I take it back to the smog test only shop for the free re-test and before conducting the test, he does and OBD scan and it shows 3 monitors 'Not Ready' for testing. They are EGR, Secondary Air, and Catalyst. So it can't be retested. The guy tells me to 'drive the car'. Literally, 2000 miles later, the three monitors still show as 'Not Ready'. There is no Check Engine light on at all. Hasn't been one on this entire time.
I need help please! I read a very old post here about someone local to SoCal saying they could help reset the DM/ECM?? Not sure what this means. I will read through this forum, but I would appreciate some guidance. My tags are expired and I need to get the vehicle smogged. I've read all about drive cycles and I'm trying to do it, but it's hard to follow what the drive cycle calls for.
