Looking for buying advice

Hi folks!

I've just joined, though I've lurked for a while. I'm finally getting close to being able to make my first purchase but would like some advice.

I'm looking at an '04 or later W220 or and '05 or later R230. I've found a good number of these at auction with 100k+ miles that I can afford.

The big question is which one would be the "better" choice considering that while I am handy, I am not a complete DIY'er? It won't be a daily driver, more of a second/weekend car.
I can change a battery, oil, bulbs, etc. But I've never opened up any panels or tried to change any other fluids. If I can find a reasonably priced indie near me I am fine with paying for some things as long as it doesn't get out of hand. I've read about the ABC problems in the R230 and I am pretty sure that I'll need to replace the rubber components on either due to age. I just don't know which one would handle the mileage better.

If there are any members that have any tips, suggestions, advice, etc. it would be great. Also anything that pertains in particular to SoCal indies and suppliers would be helpful too!

Thanks in advance
KC

Welcome to the forum.
For model specific tips, go to the model section. Most of them have common issues already lined up in stickies.
Good part is that SO CA is flooded with independent MB mechanics, bad news is that with 10+ years old MB you might face lot of issues that even at indy will cost a fortune.
Educate yourself about potential model, find trusted indy and don't save on PPI.

Thanks for the info Kajtek1,

I think I'll also be posting in each model's forum to ask how much people have spent on similar cars.

Also, pardon my ignorance but, what's PPI?

Pre Purchase Inspection.
I posted a punch list in this section some time ago.
