I managed to sort it, although I'm not 100% sure how...
When I picked the key up right before finding out there was a problem, my wife's bag had been put on top of it, so I was thinking a button had been lent on, battery drained or fob reset, so battery was first thing I checked with a spare I found in the house.
It made no difference, red LED still flashed the same as before, which manual says means battery is ok.
Tried various resets described on this and other forums, still nothing, not even an indicator flash, but central locking still worked on drivers door button, and key still started car
Last resort I thought I'd try a brand new battery, just for peace of mind (I'd look a bit stupid if I took it somewhere and that's what the issue was!) so new battery in, resets tried again (insert key in ignition, turn to pos 2, remove, hold down lock button, press unlock 5 times. Also tried press and hold drivers door locking button etc etc) still nothing
So then I take to a friends bodyshop, who has an in-house key specialist, but being Good Friday I wasn't very optimistic that he'd be there. He wasn't, but when I showed my pal the issue, hey presto, it worked fine!! And been fine ever since
So either A) battery was depleted, key reset, but needed a bit of time in the ignition to sort itself out, or B) I have an intermittent issue. Either way, I've added key cover to my insurance!
