Crank sensor problem or not?

Hi everyone, I have just brought a Mercedes c classcoupe 230k with 77k miles. I drove about 100 miles to view and drove back with no issues, however after driving back and letting it sit for about 20mins I began to drive again and it randomly cut at a set of traffic lights. It took a second to start again and when started the engine mil light came on and kompressor turned off. I got the fault codes read and it said crank sensor fault. The issue is very random and can do it many times a day or go days without anything. I heard that if it was the crank that it just wouldn't startt but it starts up almost straight away although it struggles and the kompressor is off. I have attempted to change the CPS but there seems to be a metal bracket which is bolted on by one of the bell housing bolts and holds a wire. This metal bracket seems to be blocking the sensor from being removed, I tried bending but to no success. The clutch was changed just before I brought it, any ideas? Thanks
